This course consists of two presentations with supporting documents:

• The Effects of Sarcopenia and Frailty on Swallowing Function in the Elderly, and
• Aspiration Pneumonia and Pneumonitis

This course is offered for 0.3 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level; Professional area).

• Explain the nutritional changes associated with catabolysis,
• Explain the genesis of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity,

• Discuss medical and rehabilitative interventions for patients with poor nutrition, frailty and sarcopenia.

Learning Objectives

After completing this session you will be able to:

• Differentiate between aspiration pneumonia and aspiration pneumonitis,
• Identify risk factors predisposing to pneumonia,
• Identify diagnostics differences among several common pulmonary diseases
• More accurately identify patients likely to have been admitted for related pulmonary diseases influenced by dysphagia, from those whose conditions are not likely to be assocaited with dysphagia.
