Aspiration Pneumonia and Sarcopenia
This course consists of two presentations with supporting documents:
- The Effects of Sarcopenia and Frailty on Swallowing Function in the Elderly, and
- Aspiration Pneumonia and Pneumonitis

This course is offered for 0.3 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level; Professional area).
CEU Credits and Prices
- You must complete both presentations.
- You will receive a certificate of completion from BRS-S within three weeks of completing the application and submitting to BRS-S.
- Your ASHA CEU credits will be processed through the Specialty Board on Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders and submitted to ASHA twice yearly in June and November.
- You will receive a certificate of completion from BRS-S within three weeks of completing the application and submitting to BRS-S.

- Identify organic and non-organic causes for frailty,
- Explain the nutritional changes associated with catabolysis,
- Explain the genesis of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity,
- List co-morbidities often found in patients with FTT, and
- Discuss medical and rehabilitative interventions for patients with poor nutrition, frailty and sarcopenia.

- Differentiate between aspiration pneumonia and aspiration pneumonitis,
- Identify risk factors predisposing to pneumonia,
- Identify diagnostics differences among several common pulmonary diseases
- More accurately identify patients likely to have been admitted for related pulmonary diseases influenced by dysphagia, from those whose conditions are not likely to be assocaited with dysphagia.
