Troubleshooting Viewer Problems

This site uses two different methods for presenting video: Quicktime and Mediasite.  Both require broad-band internet connections of at least 256 kbs.  You can test your connection speed at http://speedtest.net/

For Quicktime Presentations:

Windows 7 Users: Quicktime is not compatible with 64- bit Windows operating systems, the result being the controls are replaced by a black rectangle. Run the host application (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc), in Windows XP (SP 2) Compatibility Mode. To do this, right click on the application or shortcut, chose properties, navigate to the Compatibility tab, and chose "Run the program in compatibility mode." The default should be XP SP2.

If you get an error 10061 - Connection Failed at the bottom of the Quicktime window, try the following:

  • from the desktop, double-click on the QuickTime Player icon to open the application (or from the Windows Start menu: Start/Programs/QuickTime/QuickTime Player).
  • From the Edit menu, choose Preferences, then Streaming Transport. A QuickTime Settings window will open with two transport settings to choose from.
    • If you are not behind a firewall, select "Use UDP, RTSP Port ID 554" (the top one), or
    • if you are behind a firewall that does not allow port 554, select "Use HTTP, Port ID: 80."
  • Then close the QuickTime Settings window. If both of these settings work on your computer, UDP is the preferred setting for optimal performance.

If you get "negotiating" but the video never loads:

  • Open Control Panel -> Quicktime
    • Set the 'Streaming' tab to your DSL speed
    • In the advanced tab set the first drop down to 'Custom', UDP, 554
  • Open Control Panel -> Network
    • Open the properties of the DSL connection
    • In the advanced tab click on 'Settings' for Windows Firewall
    • Click on the 'Exceptions' tab and 'Add Port'
    • Type in Quicktime, 554 and make sure you click 'UDP'

For problems with Quicktime audio on Windows computers:

  • Open the QuickTime for Windows Control Panel applet.
  • When the "QuickTime Preferences" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Audio" tab.
  • Underneath "Devices", check the box "Safe mode (waveOut only)".
  • Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

Check to see if you have the latest audio driver updates for your computer and any installed components. Audio driver software updates often offer improved performance for your system. Read this article to learn more about updating drivers on your Windows PC.

Disable speaker enhancements (Windows Vista/Windows 7 only):

  • From the Start button, click Control Panel.
  • Click "Hardware and Sound" and then Sound, or click Sound if viewing as icons.
  • From the Playback tab, click Speakers and then click the Properties button
  • Click the Enhancements tab, and then select the "Disable all enhancements" checkbox.

Enable Maximum Audio Hardware Acceleration (Windows XP only)

  • On the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
  • Open Sounds and Audio Devices.
  • When the Advanced Audio Properties window opens, select the Performance tab.
  • Click the Volume tab and then click the Advanced button from the Speaker settings section.
  • In the Audio playback section increase the Hardware acceleration to Full.
  • Click OK in both the Advanced Audio Properties window and then the Sound and Audio Devices Properties window.

Conflict with Sound Enhancer: Some PC audio hardware has audio-enhancing effects that can conflict with iTunes' Sound Enhancer feature. To resolve these conflicts, do one of the following:

  • Turn off the effects for your PC's audio hardware using the configuration software that came with your hardware.
  • Disable the Sound Enhancer feature in iTunes:

For Mediasite Presentations:

There is a possible problem leading to an error message "Mediasite Player Error" with the following configuration:
Firefox, Windows 7, 64 bit mode.  Google Chrome or Internet Explorer are possible alternatives.

If you have no audio or video or having audio and none or very choppy video:

Set the connection speed for the Windows Media player. From the Streaming Media viewing screen, you can right-click on the Video window and choose Options. You will need to set the Performance options for the player. Normal settings are to Detect the connection speed, but this does not always work. Select the Choose Connection speed, and select the Modem (56K) speed. You would then need to stop and restart the viewing of the Video.
